The launch of Cambridge Original Printmakers

A year ago to the day I went to collect a donated print from Anthony Hopkinson for the Auction of Promises I had organised raising funds for the British Heart Foundation and the Joe Herrington Memorial Fund.  It was a cold, icy day but we had a great conversation while standing on his doorstep.

Anthony has been printmaking for many years now and he knew I had recently become enthralled with the world of print after completing a year of study at the Curwen Print Study Centre. His choice remark of 'wouldn't it be great for Cambridge to have a Print Fair!' stirred my imagination enough to think that yes - Cambridge could really do with an exhibition that purely focused on hand-pulled original prints - it is often confusing what the different printmaking types are and it was one of the reasons why I chose to study and learn at the Curwen in the first place.  A day later I met Susan Jones at a cafe, also picking up a donated print, and told her about this of seed of an idea that Anthony and I had had.  It then became obvious that we were the perfect team to make this seed of an idea actually happen.

So that was how Cambridge Original Printmakers (COP) started. We have met, bounced ideas around and found a perfect venue - the Pitt Building, owned by Cambridge University Press in central Cambridge.

For the past few weeks we have contacted our list of Printmakers based within 30 miles of Cambridge UK and have been overwhelmed, and heartened by the response from them. We particularly wanted to create an annual event that showcases both established and new Printmakers alongside each other. Also Kip Gresham and St Barnabas Press have been enormously supportive and excited by the launch of COP.

The exhibition starts on Friday 26 September and finishes on Sunday 5 October 2014. We have plans for talks and demonstrations during the ten days of the exhibition, and I will update progress of these plans here on my website as well as the Cambridge Original Printmakers website.
