An apt dedication

Glimpses solarplate etchings at Addenbrooke's Arts exhibition from 12 March 2015.

In March 2012 my husband Luke, at the age of 50, had major heart surgery at Papworth Hospital. While waiting with him in the recovery room I watched 8 patients be revived by the most amazing team of nurses and doctors. During those five hours I made a decision to do something that I would find challenging while raising money for the British Heart Foundation. I set myself a target of raising £5,000 in one year from March 2012 – April 2013.

To challenge myself I enlisted on a self-funded 100km trek in the Sahara Desert in March 2013 to mark the end of my year of fund raising. The Glimpses solarplate etchings on exhibition at Addenbrooke's Arts represent walks I took during the 11 months of preparation while training for the Sahara trek. They range from Cambridge Colleges on a summer’s day, in the Peak District in snow, on the coastal paths of Norfolk, around the fields of Cambridgeshire and also a trek in the mountains of Coorg, Southern India.

At the end of my fund raising year I exceeded my target and raised £9,895. I split the funds between the British Heart Foundation, the Joe Herrington Memorial Fund (this funds screening for heart conditions in teenagers through CRY) and the American Heart Association. I finished the 5-day, 119km trek in 39ºC temperatures, with shredded feet- exhausted but happy.

This series of work is dedicated to those friends who walked, laughed, encouraged and inspired me during my year of fund raising.

My Glimpses’ collection of eight small, square solarplate relief etchings are all in varied editions of 25. Some of my hand-pulled original print editions will include chine collé, gold or silver leaf, or might have some additions of hand colouring using watercolour pencils. All my work is printed on Somerset 100% cotton printmaking paper. I only use specialised lightfast oil printmaking inks.
